MEDICAL SCRIBING

A medical scribe is a paraprofessional in the allied health field who focuses on documenting doctor-patient interactions as they happen, such as during physical exams. Also, they locate data and patients for doctors and finish the paperwork required for patient treatment. The title "clinical scribe," "ER scribe," "ED scribe," or "scribe" may also be used, depending on the field of medicine the employee works in. A scribe has received training in managing health information and using health information technology to do so. If necessary, a scribe can work remotely from a HIPAA-secure location or on-site.

Someone who wants to work as a medical scribe should have the following fundamental abilities:

  • Multi-tasking:Medical scribes must be able to multitask while writing down the information gathered from the patient and paying close attention during therapy.
  • Computer literacy: Because all the data must be encoded and written down in a computer, having a foundational understanding of computers is essential
  • Typing abilities: Coding the patient information is just as important as learning how to use a computer. Typing at a rate of 45 to 60 words per minute is strongly advised.
  • EMR software skills:Learning how to utilise any electronic medical recording or electronic health recording software is necessary since the doctor will use it to keep track of each patient's records.
