               Medical scribes are allied health paraprofessionals that specialise in capturing real-time exchanges between doctors and patients, like those that occur during physical examinations. Also, they do patient care paperwork, look for data, patients, and doctor paperwork. Depending on the area of medicine the scribe practises, alternative titles for the position include clinical scribe, ER scribe, ED scribe, or plain scribe. Scribes have received training in both the administration of health information and the use of health information technology to support it. A scribe may conduct their work on-site or remotely from a HIPAA-secure location.

Among the duties of a medical scribe is

  • Putting together and preparing charts and documentation for the doctor's medical records.
  • Updating the patient's health records, including their medical history, physical examination, and other relevant data.
